Methods and materials for containment and cleaning up Small spill Stop leak if without risk. Move containers from spill area. Use spark-proof tools and explosion-proof equipment. Dilute with water and mop up if water-soluble. Alternatively, or if water-insoluble
Extraction of the xylylenediamines into toluene proved to be impossible because they are too water soluble. Analysis was thus performed by HPLC using paired-ion chromatography. Adequate sensitivity was obtained using an ultraviolet detector. Ion-pairing is necessary because the polar analytes are not otherwise sufficiently retained.

SKIN Xylene, like other organic solvents, can dissolve the skin’s natural protective oils. Frequent or prolonged skin contact can cause irritation and dermatitis, dryness, flaking and cracking of the skin. Damaged skin may allow greater absorption of chemicals.[11,12] Xylene easily penetrates most ordinary clothing and can become trapped in ordinary gloves and boots.
APPLICABILITY: The working range is 10 to 60 ppm (40 to 200 mg/m 3) for a 3-L air sample. The method is sensitive enough to determine concentrations as low as 12 ppm in 15-min samples taken at 0.2 L/min. NIOSH has sampled for chloroprene at two polychloroprene processing plants. INTERFERENCES: None known.

Effect of xylene on the central nervous system is attributed to the liposolubility of xylene in the neuronal merane. It has been suggested that xylene disturbs the action of proteins essential …
Xylene is primarily absorbed through the mucous meranes and pulmonary system. In experimental subjects, ∼60% of airborne xylene is absorbed from the lung into the bloodstream. Xylene is also readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and through broken or intact skin.
The effects of exposure to any hazardous substance depend on the dose, the duration, how you are exposed, personal traits and habits, and whether other chemicals are present. For more information, call the ATSDR Information Center at 1-800-232-4636. This public health statement tells you about xylene and the effects of exposure to it.
These are the amounts of each analyte that will give responses that are significantly different from the background response of a reagent blank. (Sections 4.1 and 4.2) The detection limits of the overall procedure are 4.1 ng per sample (0.27 µ g/m 3) and 5.0 ng per sample (0.33 µ g/m 3) for mXDA and pXDA respectively.
