Xylenes are an important petrochemical produced by alytic reforming and also by coal carbonisation in the manufacture of coke fuel. They also occur in crude oil in concentrations of about 0.5–1%, depending on the source. Small quantities occur in gasoline and aircraft fuels .
Xylene (Figure 8a) is used as a solvent in the printing, rubber, and leather industries and is one of the top 30 chemicals produced in the United States. Xylene exists as three different isomers: meta -, ortho -, and para -xylene. Generally, the industrial xylene is used as a blend of those three isomers, commonly referred to as mixed xylene.
