Isobutanol has also been identified as a constituent of petrochemical wastewater and palm mill effluents (1). (1) USEPA; Health and Environmental Effects Profile for Isobutanol. ECAO-CIN-P171 p. 10 (1986) Isobutyl alcohol was identified, not quantified in air over a sedimentation tank of a water treatment plant (1).
Methyl alcohol (CH 3 OH) is a colorless liquid with a strong odor. It is a poisonous substance that can be absorbed through the eyes, skin, lungs, and digestive system. Overexposure can cause death. Workers may be harmed by exposure to methyl alcohol. The level of harm depends upon the dose, duration, and work being done.
DOI: 10.1191/096032701718620864 Abstract Methanol, a potent toxicant in humans, occurs naturally at a low level in most alcoholic beverages without causing harm. However, illicit drinks made from "industrial methylated spirits" [5% (v/v) methanol:95% (v/v) ethanol] can cause severe and even fatal illness.

The chemical formula for ethyl alcohol is C 2 H 5 OH and its extended formula is CH 3 CH 2 OH. It is also written as EtOH and the name IUPAC is ethanol. The molecule is formed by a two-carbon chain (ethane), in which one H has been substituted by a hydroxyl group (-OH). Its chemical structure is presented in figure 1. Figure 1: Structure of ethanol
Adding ethyl alcohol to water and 5% menthol increased drug solubility in the vehicle, decreased skin polarity, and increased the role of the pore pathway to whole-skin permeation. It was concluded that the effects of l-menthol and ethyl alcohol on percutaneous drug absorption in vitro are synergistic. PMID:8140061.
