29/7/2022· Phenylethyl alcohol agar (PEA) is a selective medium that permits the growth of gram-positive cocci while inhibiting most gram-negative organisms. PEA alters the merane permeability, of Gram-negative bacteria allowing influx of otherwise blocked molecules. What is the purpose of phenylethyl alcohol agar?

Phenylethyl alcohol is volatile and will dissipate over time with air exporsure, thus reducing the selective nature of this medium. Failure to cultivate and/or isolate obligate anaerobes may be due to the following: 1. Exposure of specimen to oxygen during transport

Abstract The antibacterial activity of phenethyl alcohol (PEA) towards Gram-negative (Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa) and Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecium) was investigated. This activity was expressed as IC (inhibitory concentration) and BC (bactericidal concentration).
Phenylethyl Alcohol Agar (PEA) Northeast Laboratory Services Phenylethanol Agar is recommended for use in culturing clinical specimens of mixed Gram positive and negative flora where isolation of Gram positive organisms is desired. It is especially useful in inhibiting the “swarming” property of Proteus. Compare this item Phenylethyl Alcohol Agar
6/8/2019· Phenylethyl alcohol agar (PEA) is a selective medium used to cultivate Gram positive organisms. The active ingredient, phenylethyl alcohol, inhibits or markedly reduces growth of Gram negative organisms by interfering with DNA synthesis. PEA also prevents Proteus species from swarming across the surface of the agar.
